It is common for wooden doors to come with a mortise lock fitted, these are bolt locks that are operated via a key, the brand and size will much depend on the manufacturer’s choice. Not all locks that come fitted with wooden doors will meet the minimum requirements of insurers (BS3621) especially if you have an older door. If you want to check your lock to see if it meets BS3621 then you need to look for the kitemark that should be located on the faceplate of the lock. If you do find that your locks meet BS3621 then its likely that your locks do meet your insurers minimum requirements however, if your locks don’t display the kitemark then it is definitely worth calling out a locksmith to come and upgrade the locks, not only so that they are more secure but you may also fine that your insurance policy is void due to substandard locks.
Why Change A Mortise Lock?
There are many reasons why you might want or need your mortise lock changing, a few are listed below:
- Current locks don’t meet BS3621
- Recently moved into a new property and want to ensure only you have a copy of the keys to your house.

BS3621 Deadlock – You can have another deadlock installed at the bottom of your door for extra defence against potential intruders.
Yale Locks – If you don’t already have a rim cylinder lock fitted to work alongside your mortise lock then it is worth installing one to improve the overall security of your door.
Chains and Bolts – These can only be used when you are in your property, but they are great for extra security at night. They will stop the door from being opened past a certain point so it would make it extremely difficult for and intruder to force their way in.
